DEE CLARK
DEE CLARK” is a force to reckon with and one of few remaining DJs in the DMV spinning pure vinyl! She is a native Washingtonian, and has been an artist and DJ for over 20 years. Her principal focus: to promote, enrich, and elevate quality music and sound stimulating the mind, body and soul!
CLARK grew up in the Chocolate City surrounded by a family that loved music of all kinds ranging from: Earth Wind & Fire, Donna Summer, Pat Benatar, James Brown, Labelle, War, Curtis Mayfield and Bob Marley. She started collecting vinyl at 8 years old. For Christmas, she always wanted the latest of her favorite artists on Vinyl. She studied music and developed an avid appreciation for all kinds of generes. She was influenced by such notables as: Bow Wow Wow, The Dead Kennedy’s, Public Enemy, Kate Bush, MC Lyte, Disco, Club music aka what we now call House music! She also went to concerts at the Capital Center to see The O’Jays, punk concerts in church basements, rock concerts, and Hip-Hop battle events - taking in and digesting the myriad sounds that flow through her DJ rhythms today.
It was during the mid 80’s when her mother gave her the address to a club called The Club House because she didn’t want her to go to Go Go’s. She was so amazed by the music and the way the DJ mixed familiar with unfamiliar music she never heard before made people dance and feel that after her first visit, she and her friends were regulars at the Club House until it closed in 1990. She also took in the heady sounds of the NYC club scene, Larry Levan from the Paradise Garage (NYC), Garbros, Better Days and became completely taken by the CLUB SOUND. She began following DJs that influenced her in DC like DJ’s Tito, and Mandrill from the Club House (Washington, DC), DJ Mike from Tracks, Billy from the Delta Elite DC), just to name a few.
In her late 20’s she met up with some friends who were artists and had the same musical and artistic vision. They encouraged each other in many ways artistically. It was during this time she grew a deep passion for abstract painting and was introduced to a genre of music known as Jungle/Drum n Bass. She felt like she was born again. She began putting on art shows/parties and events at places like our first gallery called The Church St. Gallery in Washington, DC spreading the flavor, the vibe of Jungle and House music to folks of all walks and flava.
Through the years, she has collaborated with many DJs and artists as well as formed small collective artists groups such as the Hide Out at Church St. Gallery, Vanguard, the RCH project, in D.C. and the House~ology in Baltimore, Md. She is one of the founders and members of the collective DNA Injection, Dee Clark Freestyle Bang out Sessions and Speakeasy Disco! Clark loves family & the community. She loves giving back and pouring into those with special needs. Not only does Clark spin vinyl for adults, she also loves spinning for the youth. Children love the energy and free flowing sound of the beats. Outside of music, Clark enjoys naure, cooking, exploring different foods, traveling, studying history pertaining to her ancestral lineage that is indigenous to this land called “Turtle Island”.
CLARK’s selection is eclectic and soulful, spinning Jungle/Drum & Bass, House, Lounge, Oldies, Jazz, 80’s Rock, Hip Hop, Trip Hop, Wave, Alternative, Punk, World Beats, Reggae, Latin flavored music, Lounge, Love songs, Soul R & B. Dee Clark plans to spin music at the deepest level until she or the planet is no more.
